  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lori L. Fox -- Six trees to save the planet : I wasn’t sure what to expect from this book, To Speak for the Trees: My Life’s Journey from Ancient Celtic Wisdom to a Healing Vision of the Forest by Diana Beresford-Kroeger. After finishing it, I wasn’t disappointed, but I was saddened by the references to the Druid’s lost medicinal formulas and uses of trees. The Penal Years under British rule and their occupation of Ireland destroyed much of Druid culture and knowledge. However, the author, who was schooled as a young girl in the remaining knowledge of the Druid’s Brehon Laws in western Ireland, has combined what she was taught there with her study of trees as a 21st century botanist to create a compelling book of Celtic wisdom. The book includes discussions of forest bathing and a short but detailed chapter on each of the 20 trees of the Celtic Ogham alphabet. Anyone with an interest in Druids, Celts, and Ogham will find the book well-written and interesting. Furthermore, the author believes that if each person alive today were to plant a total of six trees over the course of six years, we could halt the progress of global warming long enough to find a solution to save our planet. She explains her reasoning, and I for one am determined to plant more than my share of trees. 5 stars. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 27, 2019 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ben Rogers -- What an Amazing Life Story : An amazing life, and a story well told. I read it in two sittings. This is how science and ancient earth centered knowledge should come together to benefit humanity and all the earth, not one to the harm of the other. How wonderful That the author could be surrounded by these gentle and loving Irish/Celtic treasures who imparted their knowledge to an intellegent, open, receptive vessel who went on to prove the validity of that ancient knowledge and wisdom to a world that needs to return to that wisdom at a time when our world is falling apart due to our abuse of it. She goes on to point the way, at least one way, throught the trees, that we might save the planet and ourselves, We should, we MUST listen. Please read this book! • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Ellen Dee Davidson -- One of the best books ever : Oh thank you Diana Beresford for writing this amazing book, so deeply grounded in Celtic nature traditions. And thank you for using your brilliance in support of Life and Trees. I was so shocked to discover that the Irish weren’t even allowed to have trees or even seeds during the occupation. My maternal line is Irish, and our traditions of Earth worship have not been passed down to me but I have discovered that by going to the ancient redwoods and sitting with those wise beings, I can learn much directly from the forest. It’s no accident that to subjugate a people the trees were taken—and it gives me vision that by restoring our forests (and sacred waters) we will be able to restore ourselves as well. Your book is such a brilliant guide in that direction. Thank you! ( Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from KindleQueen -- Loved this book : I just finished reading this book & will miss reading it. It's an unusual combination of being about the authors life growing up mainly in Ireland & eventually ending up in Canada, as well "speaking for the trees" and drawing on such a rich body of knowledge derived from ancient and modern-day science. She had quite a bereft stilted childhood that is reflected in how the first part of the book is written, but as we are a witness to her growing up years and adulthood, her writing becomes quite beautiful & the way she speaks for trees is extraordinary. Trees are not only magnificant unto themselves, they are essential to our lives - they release mist into the air that creates clouds so we have fresh water, they provide oxygen, medicine, food, etc. ( Reviewed in the United States on July 4, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Jody -- What you're missing about trees : This was the best book I've read for a long time. It talks about the author's upbringing that included Druid beliefs and also teaches you a bunch about trees. Pointing out specific trees and explaining each of their contributions to the forest (and earth) and some of their uses in medicines; it is a book you'll not be able to put down. It will probably make you cry as well but certainly make you want to save the earth - especially trees. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 12, 2020 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Henry Mitchell -- a plea and a warning : Drawing from deep Celtic wisdom and tradition, Beresford Kroeger delivers a convicting plea that the world's ancient forests need more from us than kind thoughts and words, and a warning that the trees will have the final say about our continuance on planet Earth. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from A customer -- Excellent book : The author’s life story is fascinating and inspiring. She lost her parents as a child and experienced loneliness and suffering, but had relatives that nurtured her. Her story illustrates how hardships and suffering can encourage growth and strength of character. The second half of this book is her sharing of the ancient Celtic and modern scientific knowledge she has accumulated. I love forests and have been deeply troubled by the deforestation taking place upon the earth, both intentionally and through stupidity. I have belonged to Rainforest Action Network for years and have planted many trees locally. The information the author gives us about the interconnection of nature is priceless, and she encourages each individual to take part in saving the forests. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from SalishSea10 -- It felt wonderful to read this book! : Diana Beresford-Kroeger’s book felt like a breath of fresh air. She shared Celtic wisdom, often confirmed by modern science, intended to heal body and soul. I was struck by one thing in particular. She described the treatment of an orphan in the 20th century in Catholic Ireland as a threatening experience where a court told her she could be sent to a Magdalene Laundry unless claimed by a relative and making “progress”. Then she explained that based on the Celtic Brehon Laws, an orphan was not abandoned, but rather became the responsibility of everyone in the community. Everyone helped to raise and educate a child who was left without parents. What a startling contrast. Beresford-Kroeger wants to share Celtic wisdom with us, and it seems that we are desperately in need of it. ( Reviewed in the United States on November 1, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from MW -- Beautiful book about an extraordinary woman : What an extraordinary woman & life. I first read about her, fictionalised, in Richard Powers' 'The Overstory' & had to follow her up. A life of service to trees & humans & life full stop. I loved this. So full of story, humanness, treeness & well, wisdom actually, passed down from her Celtic forebears. At times I despair at the loss of wisdom in the world of how we need to live in harmony with everything that lives. This reminds me that it does live on in some who do amazing work in the world.
